The word Voodoo originates from the Fon language of West Africa and has taken on many spellings and interpretations over time. Some spell it Vodou, meaning introspection or a journey into the unknown. Others use Voudon, referring to the invisible power—the creator of all things.
Dr. Hammett Mushula defines Voodoo as a spiritual concept born from the human mind, shaped by experience and focused intention. It begins as a connection—whether with nature or humanity—and evolves through awareness. This spiritual process organizes energy into a symbolic system, ultimately forming a sacred name and purpose.
Voodoo is one of the oldest living spiritual traditions, originating in Africa and carried worldwide through the transatlantic slave trade. Like its practitioners, it faced immense persecution. In the Americas, rituals were often misinterpreted as Satanic, leading to harsh suppression. These distorted views worsened in the 20th century, especially through sensational films in the 1970s that falsely linked Voodoo with blood rituals and zombies.
Despite this history, Voodoo is still widely practiced, preserved through oral tradition and adapted across cultures. While names and customs may vary, the core belief remains: a divine energy flows through all things, linking the universe, the creator, and the self. Central to this are the Loa—spiritual intermediaries who balance the human and divine.

Dr. Hammett Mushula was born in 1943 into a powerful spiritual bloodline, inheriting sacred gifts passed down through generations of healers, seers, and traditional spiritualists. From a young age, he was trained by his parents and grandparents—respected figures in their communities—who recognized his rare sensitivity to spiritual forces and guided him in the ways of ancestral wisdom, herbal healing, and esoteric practices.
Carrying the weight and wonder of this spiritual legacy, Dr. Mushula was destined to lead. In 1990, he followed divine direction to New Orleans, where he founded what would become the Roots and Spirituals Temple—a sacred space rooted in traditional West African spirituality and deeply connected to the spirit world. His vision took firm root. By 1994, the Temple had grown into a powerful spiritual hub, laying the foundation for what is now a globally recognized center of healing, teaching, and cultural preservation.
A pivotal moment came in 1995, marking a transition in both spiritual energy and purpose. The Temple entered a new phase of evolution with the addition of a Cultural Center. Today, the Roots and Spirituals Temple includes a sacred altar room, a working herb apothecary and botanica, and a spiritual gift shop—serving as a haven for seekers from around the world.
The Temple’s mission is to serve all people—regardless of background—offering spiritual services, personalized petitions, and deep healing rituals rooted in Afro-centric American Voodooism, the Grand Spirits of New Orleans Voodoo, and the Great Universal Spiritual Tradition. It also plays an essential educational role, shedding light on the true nature of Voodoo while actively working to dispel myths, combat stereotypes, and restore respect to this ancient tradition.
Since founding the Temple, Dr. Hammett Mushula has become a revered figure in global spiritual circles. His work has been featured in numerous international documentaries and media outlets including BBC, NBC, Discovery, CBS, ABC, Telemundo, Sci-Fi, MTV, and Entertainment Tonight. Major publications such as Spin, Playboy, and The New York Times have also profiled his unique spiritual contributions.
In 1999, Dr. Mushula’s influence extended to Rybinsk, Russia, where a group of 14 seekers invited him to serve as their Voodoo Ambassador. Over three weeks, he guided their spiritual awakening and helped them establish their own Voodoo temple. He is now preparing to return to Russia to continue nurturing the community he helped inspire.
